Pentecost Collective Worship
Great Bear Class have Collective Worship every day as part of our learning. Sometimes we are in the hall, sometimes we are all together as a whole school and sometimes we are not! Here we are joining YR and Y2 for Collective Worship in Cygnus Class.

Celebrating The Queen's 90th Birthday
On Friday, we enjoyed a lunchtime celebration for The Queen's 90th Birthday. Great Bear Class had made crowns and flags to wear and wave and looked brilliant in red, white and blue!
After our fish and chips lunch we were entertained by the school choir, Rigor Junior Morris, Year Six with a Kings and Queens of Great Britain poem and songs from the staff too! Everyone also sang "Sing"by Gary Barlow and Revered Rees led us in prayer and reflection.
It was a lovely afternoon and we enjoyed a special treat of cake in our garden area too!
Here we are looking very patriotic!

Life in the 80s!
Last week Great Bear class had a great time learning about childhood in the past and how it is different to being a child in 2016.
We found out that whilst a lot of the sweets are still being made today, they were much cheaper in the 1980s. We looked at how different the toys were from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, we used old Woolworths catalogues to do some retro shopping Numeracy.
We looked closely at toys from the 1980s and drew them carefully in Art. Great Bear Class also enjoyed watching old children's TV programmes and thinking about how they have changed. The animation styles and puppets made us laugh!
Great Bear Class became history detectives as we looked for clues in photographs to help us order them in a timeline. We looked at the clothes and hair styles, the toys and anything we could spot in the background, the children made some excellent observations.
Great Bear Class interviewed Mrs Dummett and Mrs Latham-Warde about their childhoods and could have asked questions all day, the children were all very engaged and interested in being a child from the 1960s, 70s and 80s.
We also had great fun carefully looking at all the wonderful things people had brought in from their family's childhood, thank you for allowing us to look at them.

Important Things Going On In Great Bear Class
Time just seems to be whizzing by as we quickly approach our final term together in Great Bear Class. So here are just a few reminders of things that are happening that we need your valuable support with!
May 9th-13th History Week-Changes During Living Memory-Childhood
We are looking for photos, toys, books, clothes or anything else that we might find interesting to help us understand how being a child has changed. We will treat any loaned items with the utmost of care. We would also love some visitors to come and talk to us and answer questions about their childhood.
13th May-Come in red, white and blue clothing for Queen's 90th Birthday celebrations.
18th May-Lowry dress up day to inspire "Bright Write" planning.
20th May-Athlete visit, please see letter sent home on Friday 6th May.
23rd May- Parents' meeting about Year One National Phonics Check 2.45pm in Great Bear Class.
9th June-Join us for a Phonics session, more details to follow.
Week of 13th June National Phonics Check will be taking place.
Date yet to be confirmed-RSPCA fund raising event.

RSPCA Visit
On Tuesday 3rd May, Great Bear had a visit from Claire who works for the RSPCA. She came in to talk to us about the work the RSPCA does to protect British wildlife and domestic animals living here in the UK. We had a super time learning about the history of the RSPCA, what an RSPCA inspector does, facts and jokes about British wildlife, the five needs of pets, why micro-chipping your pet is important and why disposing of your rubbish safely is important for British wildlife.
We learnt all this amazing information through: film clips, songs, scanning "pets" for microchips, looking at pets with our learning partners and discussing which of their needs was not being met and much more!
Claire was a brilliant visitor and we enjoyed her visit lots, she also said some lovely things about Great Bear Class. WE was impressed with our general knowledge, questions, behaviour and how we tackled the activities, some of them she usually only does with Key Stage 2!

Mastery in Maths
This week in Numeracy we have been looking at Capacity. We have talked about how this means measuring how much something holds, usually liquid and we had a big discussion on all different types of liquids.
Great Bear Class already have a good understanding of estimating and measuring to a Year One standard so I was looking for ways to use their knowledge and understanding to challenge them. We worked our way through several group challenges that needed Great Bear to use their understanding of estimating, measuring, size and proportion.

Collective Worship with Great Bear Class
You may have heard Great Bear Class talking about Collective Worship, this the correct term for Assembly and we have been exploring what worship might mean to different people, including the children.
Collective Worship happens everyday in some form, whether it be with the school, our key stage, just our class or through singing. Great Bear Class are enjoying learning about how an alter, candles, colours and symbols are used during Collective Worship.
We are currently learning, thinking and reflecting about Wisdom this term in Collective Worship, linking it to stories from the Bible, modern children's stories and our everyday lives. The children have amazing ideas and we often have very thoughtful discussions in our own class Collective Worships and whilst reflecting on whole school Collective Worships. Ask your Great Bear person about their ideas on Wisdom!
